The City of Livingston, Sumter County Chamber of Commerce, and the University of West Alabama are actively involved in retail and commercial recruitment.  They proactively work together to determine needs, gaps, and what the county can support, and recruit targeted restaurants, boutiques, and retail.  The latest opening/announcements include, Tombecbe Trading Post, The Shine Shop, Camellia’s Boutique, and several others are in the works.

The type of industries Sumter County wants to attract/is recruiting are forestry related industries, including agriculture, agri-tourism…; distribution and transportation; small manufacturing.  The University of West Alabama was a Center for Workforce Development.  We also partner with AIDT to provide OJT for new and expanding companies; West Alabama Works and Region 3 Workforce Development Council; and Shelton State Community College.

 

Sumter County Employment Breakdown

The Educational Services industry sector was the leading employer in Sumter County with 840 jobs in the second quarter of 2015, followed by Health Care and Social Assistance with 330 jobs (Table 2). Rounding out the top five industries by employment were Retail Trade; Manufacturing; and Public Administration. These five industries provided 2,067 jobs, 69 percent of the county total employment.

The average monthly wage across all industries in the county was $2,815. Two of the top five industries– Educational Services and Manufacturing–paid more than this average. Overall, the highest average monthly wages were in Construction ($4,428); Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services ($3,982); and Educational Services ($3,806). Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation paid the least at $614 per month.
