Education in Sumter County offers a myriad of opportunities not found in the vast majority of small towns and rural areas in America.  We are home of the University of West Alabama, a regional institution of higher learning that offers bachelor through doctoral programs. Plus, UWA is the only university in Alabama that offers a full-menu of associate and technical degree programs as well.

Also, Sumter County is home to the University Charter School and the Sumter County school system, both of which are public systems offering pre-K through 12 education.

The University Charter School, organized as a complete public school to offer pre-K through 12 academics, is a highly innovative, rigorous educational experience for our students. UCS has been recognized nationally as the only rural county charter school on a university campus in America.

The Sumter County Schools provide public education throughout the community, with an emphasis on and commitment to academic achievement, service to students and families, and partnerships with the overall community.
